Read this before you compare prices
Almost every complaint about renting a car in Mexico comes down to one rule, and it is neither a scam nor optional.
Third-party liability insurance is required by Mexican law, and your credit card does not replace it. Article 63 Bis of the Federal Roads, Bridges and Motor Transport Law, in force since September 2014, requires every vehicle travelling on federal roads to carry compulsory third-party liability cover. Highway 307 — the road from the airport to every hotel on this coast — is one of them. What a credit card covers is damage to the rental car, which is a different thing from liability towards other people. That is why a car advertised at $5 a day arrives at the counter at $30–45. Two consequences worth acting on:
- Compare prices with the mandatory cover included, not the headline rate. The quote that looks three times higher is usually the honest one.
- Expect a deposit hold on your credit card — several hundred to a few thousand dollars, released after you return the car. It has to be available credit, and a debit card is frequently refused for it.
Driving in Cancun
Cancun is where most people pick the car up, because the counters are at the airport itself. Whether you need one at all depends entirely on what you plan to do with your days — and the honest answer is that plenty of visitors here do not.
- Pick-up is at the airport, not in townThe rental desks are on site, so the car is yours from the moment you land. That also means your very first drive is Highway 307, straight out of the terminal.
- Two Cancuns, two different answersIn the Hotel Zone a car mostly sits in paid parking. Downtown and beyond, it opens up cenotes, ruins and the whole Riviera Maya.
- Topes are the number-one cause of damageUnpainted speed bumps, including on main roads through towns. They catch out almost every first-time driver here.
- Fuel is served for youSay the amount, watch the pump reset to zero before it starts, and check your change.
At the counter
- Bring the right documents Driving licence, passport and a credit card in the driver's own name.
- Photograph the car before you leave All four sides, the roof, the wheels and the fuel gauge, with the timestamp on. The most useful five minutes of the whole rental.
- Check the fuel policy in writing Full-to-full is the one to want. Anything else builds margin into the fuel.
- Ask what the insurance excludes Specifically the excess, and tyres and glass, which are commonly left out.

Your first drive
It is 20 km and about 25 minutes on Highway 307, which is dual carriageway and well surfaced the whole way. If you are picking the car up at the airport, that drive is your first one — worth knowing that the returns replace left turns, and that the speed bumps through towns are frequently unpainted.

When not to rent
We earn a commission when you book through the module on this page, so it is worth saying plainly when renting is the wrong choice: if you are staying at an all-inclusive and not planning to leave it, the car will sit in a paid parking space all week. Renting for the two days you actually want to drive, locally, usually costs less than a week at the airport counter.
